The quench and temper lines for long products, such as steel bars, have an induction heating section and a quenching section, followed by tempering induction coils. The heating and tempering coils are usually divided into several controllable zones. This has the advantage that the last zone in each case can be used for homogenisation, austenitisation, solution annealing (for stainless steels), or hardness adjustment.
On modern production lines, the quench and temper machines from Inductotherm – (USA) are the standard for tempering tube, wires and bar material. The most impressive features of the quench and temper lines from Inductotherm – (USA) are their high efficiency, accuracy and versatility.

The bars are individually fed in to the heat-treatment line via a worktable that is 7 metres long. P. SOOD & CO. can therefore process bars with lengths ranging from 2.80 metres to 7 metres.
We match the size of the induction heating coil to the diameter of the round
steel bar being processed.
Five different coil sizes from 6 mm up to 80 mm are available.
Selecting a coil that closely fits the diameter of the steel bar increases the efficiency of
the non-contact induction heating process. ‘Choosing the coil of best fit improves energy
efficiency, as less electrical power is lost, which is an important criterion in our energy
‘It also means that the heat-treatment process can be carried out even more precisely, which helps to enhance the quality of our
steel products.
Technical details such as these enable P. SOOD & CO. to conduct induction
hardening and tempering of individual steel bars across the entire dimensional range from
6 mm to 80 mm in Wires – 6 mm to 18 mm dia. 20 mm till 80 mm in Straight Lengths.
The set up can be modified to process – Tubes & Pipes too. (Specific information on demand)
Re - State-of-the-art facility for supply of HARDNED Bar through Induction Quench & Temper Line from the world-renowned manufacturer - Inductotherm Group.
We at P. SOOD & CO. have always believed in adopting the latest technology for the Heat Treatment of steel bars & wires -
We offer a comprehensive range of services for the heat treatment of steel bars and wires, including soft annealing (spheroidizing), pickling and phosphating of wire rods, cold drawing of bars and coils, peeling and grinding of bars, as well as induction quenching and tempering.
We have commissioned a 1.6 Ton/hour Quench and Temper Line that accommodates bar sizes ranging from 22 mm to 75 mm in diameter and lengths of up to 6 meters. This facility provides single-bar heat treatment, enabling the highest quality and optimal utilization of material potential. It achieves this through the controlled adjustment of the microstructure and steel properties on a bar-by-bar basis. Our state-of-the-art, fully automated production facility is sourced from the renowned Inductotherm Group.
This results in uniform mechanical properties throughout the entire bar and batch, meeting the stringent requirements of the automotive industry, oil fields, windmill fasteners, and other steel components that are subjected to high stress.
"induction quench and temper steel" include: induction hardened and tempered steel, induction heat treated steel, quench-tempered steel with induction heating, martensitic hardened steel (with induction), or simply "Q&T steel (induction)" as "Q&T" stands for quench and temper; all referring to the process where steel is heated using induction and then rapidly cooled (quenched) followed by a tempering heat treatment to achieve desired mechanical properties.
Through hardening is a process used to improve the hardness and tensile strength of a metal alloy. This process involves using a rapid quench technique to change the microstructure of the metal while imparting increased strength. In contrast to case hardening, which strengthens only the outer layer of the material, through hardening strengthens the entire cross-section of the alloy.
Through-hardening steel contains typically 1% carbon and alloying elements for hardenability, exhibiting very high strength but low ductility. Used with martensitic or bainitic hardening.
Steel bars are induction, quench & tempered as per CQI-9 guidelines.
The dimensions of the heating coils for induction heating are adapted to the bar steel diameter, whereby three different dimensions ranging from 20 to 80 millimeters can be selected.
This adaptation achieves a high level of efficiency, as the non-contact heating of the steel becomes more effective.
This increases the energy efficiency and precision of the tempering process, which in turn improves the quality of the steel..
We offer peeled and ground bars as well as the option of cutting off the bar ends and cut-to-length facility.

Understanding Heat Treated Bars: Enhancing Steel Performance
When it comes to optimizing the performance of steel, heat treatment plays a crucial role. Different processes can significantly enhance the machinability, toughness, and strength of various grades of steel. Here’s a closer look at the different types of heat treated bars and their unique benefits.
Heat Treated Bars
1. Quenched and Tempered Bars
Quenched and tempered bars are produced according to specific conditions outlined in various steel standards. This precisely controlled hardening process, combined with strict composition limits, allows for accurate control of hardness post-tempering. The resulting structure of tempered martensite provides these steels with a high level of hardness, making them suitable for demanding applications.
2. Surfaced / Induction Hardened Bars
For steels with a carbon content above 0.30%, induction hardening is employed to achieve a hard, wear-resistant surface while maintaining an unaltered core material. The minimized composition scatter ensures uniform hardness throughout the bar, making it ideal for applications requiring durability and strength.
Conclusion
Heat treated bars are essential in various industrial applications, providing enhanced machinability, toughness, and strength tailored to specific needs. Understanding the different types of heat treatment processes allows manufacturers and engineers to select the right material for their projects, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Whether it’s for intricate machining or high-stress applications, the right heat treated bar can make all the difference.
